Corporate Responsibility

Do charitable initiatives benefit business?

Having balance sheets in the black is no longer the sole means of measuring a company's success. SMEs can increase their clout in terms of brand positioning by adopting a strategic approach that gives back to the community within which they operate, by supporting sociological, cultural or ecological causes through volunteer initiatives. Rhino Africa, a tour operator based in Cape Town, is such a case in point. Their “Challenge4aCause” social responsibility programme serves as a dynamic platform to generate vital funds and awareness in support of non-profit organisations while impacting favourably on their public image.

Digital Marketing

The digital age makes township taverns trendier

One Digital Media's CEO, Mike Bosman, previously Group CEO of TBWA\South Africa, is causing quite a stir in township taverns. The Loxion Network is ODMs latest brainchild, delivering advertising content directly to high resolution flat screen monitors installed in the top taverns nationwide. The network is capable of downloading different content to each screen, or to a defined group of screens, in real time, via satellite, the Internet and GPRS.

Eco-Tourism

Eco-tourism and why even heaven needs a manager

The tourism industry has traditionally placed an emphasis on growing the market, without focusing on maintaining and preserving the product or experience. A demand-led approach could lead to its demise. Eco-tourism is challenging this perspective by allowing a supply-oriented management outlook to be its guiding light. Efforts by the historic Mosaic Farm on the Atlantic coastline, two hours south-east of Cape Town, would suggest that such an approach is paying off and setting a fine example.

Hospitality Industry

How chic is Long?

Cape Town's plush new minimalist and state-of-the-art boutique hotel and café, Urban Chic, is holding a launch party in conjunction with Nina Monda PR, Publicity & Events on April 5, to celebrate by invitation only, the PR supremo's return to Cape Town from the UK and Urban Chic's arrival on Long Street.

Infant & Children's market

Fussy babies: What's the fuss?

Recent stats show that up to 85% of mothers experience some form of mood disruption in the weeks following their baby's birth. Ranging from tearfulness and feelings of despair, these feelings normally resolve within a few weeks. In its more severe form, however, it's called post natal depression (PND). PND can appear within three months of the baby's arrival and last for up to 18 months, interfering with a mother's ability to properly care for her child.

IT Industry

“Handy” solution for extended consumer reach

February sees the commercial launch of Cape Town-based mobile solutions' provider, Mobilitrix, riding the wave of the mobile communication's upsurge. The company is the brainchild of Andrew Cardozo, an expert in satellite and cellular communication technology, with NASA work experience, and has leveraged the power of the mobile phone to make all forms of consumer-pitched advertising interactive in real-time.

Lifestyle

Taking the grind out of kitchens

The pace of today's life is relentless. Arriving home at the end of a busy schedule, the last thing we want to face is being a slave in our own kitchen. Fortunately ergonomics is saving the day. Modern kitchen layouts, coupled with clever appliance designs, are transforming the drudgery of the past into a creative joy. Irene Borges, brand manager for Tedelex, says that good kitchen design minimises stress on the body while ergonomically designed appliances decrease user fatigue and discomfort.

Being grilled about your health is a good thing

A panel of experts at this year's International Houseware Show in Chicago identified wellness as a key trend for 2010. There's a growing awareness about needing to make the right choices to maximise nutrition, exercise more and manage stress better in order to pursue greater well-being. George Foreman, ex-heavyweight boxing champion, has aligned with this cleaner living trend by endorsing a range of fat-reducing electric food grillers, and a newly designed and packaged category of namesake grillers and rotisseries aimed at the health-conscious professional is about to be launched in South Africa.

SA Design Guru aligns with International Furniture Trends

Pierre Cronje is one of only a handful of select South African master furniture designers whose unique craftsmanship and progressive vision have recently earned him the VISI Designer of the Year award. Over the past two decades, his name has become synonymous with bespoke furniture of the highest quality.

Music Industry

Stoking the Coke Fest

This year's “My Coke Fest” kicked off with rock concerts in Johannesburg and Cape Town, late April and early May. The Coke marketing challenge was to supercharge the event by packaging the live experience in such a way that fans would feel completely “plugged in” to the event. Total audience involvement means greater recall of the event and translates into heightened brand awareness.

Public Relations

Dazzling the senses, touching hearts and stimulating minds

PR supremo, Nina Monda, is back in the mother city! Monda PR, Publicity & Events will be celebrating their exciting relocation back to Cape Town after five years in the U.K., at a launch party on 5 April, by invitation only, hosted by the designer boutique hotel, Urban Chic on Long.

Wine Industry

Intrepid explorers launch online wine boutique

Twenty-six centuries ago, the Greeks brought the art of winemaking to the shores of France. Yet Dutch colonialists only introduced viniculture to South Africa in the late seventeenth century.
